Le Poteau Mitan Atilêwá

One manifestation of the Vodou concept of Poteau-Mitan, Le Poteau Mitan Atilêwá is firmly grounded in West African cosmology, particularly the Yoruba tradition. Across the vast bulk of its sixteen segments living inscriptions flow, scribed in letters of flesh, chains, cowries and blood. Conceived of as vast carven pillar, the Atilêwá manifested in San Francisco at the height of the "Bridge the World" concert, which sprawled over San Francisco's North Beach area, centred on the Mabuhay Gardens venue. Moulded by the spirit of the area, it rose to the sky as a vast mockery of the dilapidated towerblocks of the Tenderloin district, and its inscriptions and prophecies sprawled in harsh gang tags across its countless corroded floors.
